NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia International Tattoo is just days away, and this year’s is a monumental celebration, marking the 250th birthday of the United States Army, Navy and Marine Corps.
One of the main themes of this year’s Virginia International Tattoo is a salute to 250 years of service and sacrifice. Within just the first few minutes of the Tattoo, it will celebrate and honor the 250th anniversary of three branches of the military.
Morgan Ramirez, a Navy musician, said he is excited for the shows.
“It really brings it home to, ‘Wow, we’re celebrating 250 years,’” Ramirez said.
The Virginia International Tattoo is a signature event of the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. The General Assembly created it to remember Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of independence.
“Big year for us, not only here, but all over the country,” said Lt. Bernardo Miethe, executive officer for the Training and Doctrine Command.
The Virginia Arts Festival said every performance will be a tribute to the soldiers, sailors and Marines.
“We’re here to share to everybody what we do on a daily basis and what the Army is about,” Miethe said.
Both Ramirez and Miethe said there are some fun surprises for viewers.
“[It’s] such a big milestone for the United States Navy,” Ramirez said, “and to be able to celebrate their music with a bunch of different countries being here as well.”
Ramirez said the Navy runs deep in his family, with three generations serving our country. He added that singing in this Tattoo will be very special.
“My grandpa on my dad’s side, he joined the Navy back from the Philippines,” Ramirez said. “He joined a submarine. He was a steward on a submarine, and then he became a mess specialist and now a culinary specialist. And then my dad joined, and he was a Navy nurse for 30 years.”
The Tattoo will be at Scope Arena from April 24-27.
