HRS: Meet legendary Hampton High School football coach Mike Smith

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – With more than 500 career wins, 12 state championships and numerous players going pro, Mike Smith retired in 2021 after more than 50 years as the head coach of the Hampton High School football team. Those stats are getting him inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and rightfully so. However, it’s the personal impact he made on his players and the community that really deserves recognition. Coach Smith looks back at his life and legendary career in this week’s I Am Hampton Roads.

Coach Smith shared many incredible stories, but one in particular stood out: how he discovered future NFL Hall of Famer, Dwight Stephenson. Here’s a web-extra of Coach Smith recounting that moment.
