Maury dominates Briar Woods 46-0 to win Class 5 state championship

HARRISONBURG (WAVY) — For the first time in program history, Maury has won consecutive Class 5 state championships.

The Commodores (15-0) dominated Briar Woods (10-4) out of Ashburn 46-0 Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium on the campus of James Madison University.

Maury led 14-0 at the half and it turned it up a notch in the second half.

Autori Newkirk opened up the third quarter with a 57-yard scoring strike to Elijah Moss to put the Commodores up 22-0.

Newkirk was 14 of 20 for 311 yards and five touchdown passes.

“We’ve been talking about this the past 9-10 months about making history and we did,” Indiana signee LeBron Bond said.

Future Clemson Tiger Ari Watford did not play in the game after suffering a leg injury last week, but he was still there to support his team.

“It’s very special, I grew up with these guys,” Watford said. “To be able to make our mark on history together, it means a lot.”

The state title win was Maury’s third in the last five years.
