NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Maury Commodores are one win away from winning their second consecutive state championship Saturday when they take on Briar Woods from Loudoun County.
Maury 2024 record: 14-0 (Outscored opponents 780-95, five shutouts)
Briar Woods 2024 record: 10-3 (Outscored opponents 336-163)
Maury head coach Dyrii McCain: “This team we are going in and playing is hungry for the opportunity to be here. We have to understand that. That has to be the way are practicing yesterday, today and tomorrow and Friday. We have to understand that this team has been waiting for this moment for a long time. The better we understand that through practice, the more successful we’ll be, whether it’s the beginning of the game or a last play situation. I think we’ve been built for those, so we have to understand that part right there.”
Maury wide receiver LeBron Bond (Indiana): “Our young boys look up to us, so we have to lead them the right way so a big school can come get them, [too].”
Maury running back Leon Clark (William & Mary): “When we’re in the locker room, we’re always talking about it, talking about how we can be the first team to go back-to-back.”
Class 5 state championship:
Maury (14-0) vs. Briar Woods (10-3), 11:30 a.m. Saturday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
