PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Throughout the month of May, WAVY 10 is highlighting some of the excellent educators throughout our region.
Portsmouth Public Schools nominated three teachers this year, including Deanna Hayes, Lerin Gables and Heaven Tate. 10 On Your Side’s Julia Avery spoke with Mrs. Hayes, a 2nd grade teacher at Park View Elementary, who said she has felt called to teach her entire life.

Lerin Gables
Lerin Gables is a 6th grade teacher at Brighton Elementary School. PPS told WAVY 10 that Ms. Gables works to build strong connections with her students to help keep them engaged in learning.
“Her classroom is a positive, supportive environment where all students can thrive,” PPS said.
Heaven Tate
Heaven Tate is a math teacher at Waters Middle School. PPS told WAVY 10 that Ms. Tate keeps students engaged by blending data-driven instruction, interactive games and strategic strategies. Tate also works closely with her co-teacher, where they both work to enhance the learning experience of their students.
“She fosters a dynamic classroom environment by incorporating educational games that make learning fun while maintaining focus,” PPS said.
