NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Almost a year has passed, but the grief is still fresh for the family of Tahesha Saunders, a 35-year-old woman who was murdered Aug. 3 of last year by someone her family says was a man she had been dating.

“Her son said this one thing, the man that she really loved, that’s the man that took her life,” said Monica Saunders, Tahesha Saunders’ mother. “That week, that’s when she started coming and telling me things, like he’s running up on her punching her in her face. She had a cut over her eye. That’s the day I told her, ‘You need to go call the cops.”

The family wishes they saw the signs sooner. They’re now advocates for anyone who finds themselves in an abusive relationship.

“Don’t give that man not the second time to say I’m sorry for doing this,” Monica Saunders said. “Get out the first time.”

They continue to seek justice for their loved one.

“I want him to pay for what he’s done to Tahesha,” her mother said.

Most days now are spent remembering her as the funny, music loving, caring mother of six that she was. Saturday, they will have a remembrance ceremony for Tahesha Saunders. It will take place at 2 p.m. at 1112 33rd St. in Newport News.

“It’s just to keep her legacy, keep her name alive, and just a reminder for people who have been through domestic violence, this could be you if you don’t take the steps that you need to get out of that situation,” said Ashley Spratley, Tahesha Saunders’ cousin.

Ronald Brown was arrested by police in connection to the murder and faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of firearm in commission of a felony in connection to the homicide. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 22.
