CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — We all know diapers can get very expensive. That’s why the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia teamed up with Chesapeake Regional for a diaper drive focused on dads!
Any father who shows up with their children, can get one month’s supply of diapers for free. Diaper company EveryLife donated the diapers for the event.
The Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia and Chesapeake Regional want to spread the word to help as many dads as possible.
“We’re going to have pallets of diapers that we’re going to be able to give away,” said Stephen Shepheard of the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia. “They’re going to come in. We’re going to have the dads [that] are here with their kids, and we’re going to be able to determine which is the right size for them.”
The Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia Diaper Drive is Saturday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., behind the Lifestyle Health and Fitness Center at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. The address is 800 Battlefield Blvd. N, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
“It’s really important for Chesapeake to be able to give back to the dads in need. There are a lot of single dads in the in the area, and it’s really important to be able to provide diapers for parents, especially during the holidays, where the finances might be a little difficult,” said Keiara Carter of Chesapeake Regional.
Diapers are available while supplies last. Remember, fathers must show up with their children to be eligible to receive the diapers.

WAVY first introduced reported on the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia the first week of December after the organization’s CEO shared information about the Father Christmas Program. While nominations in Hampton Roads are now closed, the program asked the community to nominate deserving dads in the community who had fallen on hard times. Out of those nominations, 10 local fathers will be selected to receive $500 cash ahead of Christmas.
While the Fatherhood Foundation is based in Richmond, it has just opened services in Hampton Roads. That is where Shepheard comes in. He is the Hampton Roads development director for the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia.
“It’s about creating and providing programs to strengthen dads, and to create programs around dads so that they’re engaged with their kids, so that they’re more involved in their lives,” said Shepheard.
He said the organization is always looking at ways to help dads and make family life better. That is one of the reasons it created the diaper drive.
“Sometimes there are dads that just have that little bit of an extra need, and sometimes it’s just the smallest thing that makes a difference. So, with the diaper drive, it was about finding ways in which we could engage dads and give them just a little bit of breathing room,” said Shepheard.
Carter said she is happy Chesapeake Regional teamed up with the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia. She emphasized the important role dads play in the lives of their partners, wives and children.
“A lot of times with postpartum, you feel as though you don’t have anybody to talk to or you don’t have any communication. So, it’s really important for dads to say, ‘Hey, I’m a part of this with you. We created this bond together, so I’m able to help you. I’m able to help my partner with anything you may need,'” said Carter.
In addition to the diaper drive, the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia and Chesapeake Regional teamed up to create free programs for fathers.
“We’re here for them, and we want them to know they’re not singled out. They’re not by themselves. A lot of times dads don’t know where to go, so they can come here if they need help or they have questions, and this is a community where we are all involved,” said Carter.
