Blog: Temps slowly climb

As we take a look at temperatures over the last couple of weeks we notice that it has definitely been a cold period.

As of yesterday we were still not in the top 10 coldest Januarys on record, but I’d like to see how the numbers will be after today’s numbers factor in. This morning low temps were in the single digits over several locations.

Low Temps This Morning

We had mostly clear skies when I came in. However, since then a batch of clouds has come up from the south.

Clouds This Morning

There was a small/weak area of low pressure near the coast with high pressure to our west.

Regional Weather Map

It didn’t look like there was any precipitation on the radar, but it did look like there was a little drizzle on the camera in Manteo.

Camera In Manteo This Morning

The temperatures were around 32-33 degrees down there. So this would likely be freezing drizzle. However, it will be mainly salt in the wound as many areas down that way already have 8-9 inches of snow on the ground. Any precip down that way should move out to sea during by midday as the low slides east. The rest of the region will have a mix of sun and clouds. We’ll have lighter winds than yesterday. So high temps should be able to reach the mid 30s.

Forecast Temps Today

I’m hopeful that we’ll get some clearing late in the day. These conditions won’t cause a lot of melting, but there should be some. Roads should improve a little by later today.

Travel Impacts

Tonight we’ll have partly cloudy skies and a light north wind at 5-10mph. We shouldn’t be as cold as this morning, but temps will still be in the teens and 20s. If there are any single digit readings, then they should only be in a spot or two. Tomorrow we’ll have partly cloudy skies and quiet weather. We’ll have a very light north breeze. High temps should be able to warm up to the upper 30s to near 40.

Forecast Temps Tomorrow

This should allow for a lot more melting on the roads. So driving conditions should be a lot better tomorrow afternoon into the weekend. We’ll be dry on Saturday. For now I have high temps near 40, but some models suggest we’ll drop to the upper 30s.

Temperature Trend

The good news is that it does still look like we’ll get close to 50 on Sunday. We should be partly cloudy. We’ll see if we stay that mild Monday into Tuesday. The models trended warmer, but it’s a recent trend.

While we did have a good snow here, they had a lot of problems from the snow across the Deep South. There were numerous problems with flights, travel, and businesses. Here is an article with more of the effects from their snow. Deep South snow effects.
