Blog: Offshore low departs. Mostly mild & dry this week

The weather has been very different from north to south over the last 24 hours. An area of low pressure passed just to our south overnight. It did push some rain and moisture up to the Southside for a time.

Rain Last Night

However, the majority of the rain has been over northeast North Carolina.

This morning the low was pushing farther offshore, but there was still some rain and wind across the Outer Banks.

Low Pushing Out To Sea

The winds were gusting between 20 and 30mph down across the Outer Banks for a time. It will be breezy down there for the first half of the day.

Forecast Wind Gusts

However, the rest of the region will have some pretty nice weather today. High pressure is building in from the west.

Regional Weather Map

It will be a bit breezy in Hampton Roads this morning, but winds will settle down this afternoon.

Wind Speed Forecast

Despite a northerly breeze we should be able to warm up today with all of the sunshine. High temps will aim for the mid-upper 60s with cooler temps near the shore.

Forecast Temps Today

Tomorrow the overall forecast is simple, but the temps will get tricky. Basically, a cold front will move into the region and stall out. This will make it much cooler to the north and near the shore compared to inland and western locations. High temps inland may hit the 70s. Meanwhile along the shore it may only reach the upper 50s.

Forecast Temps Tomorrow

We’ll be mostly to partly sunny. Winds will turn out of the east at 8-12mph. Meanwhile temps over other parts of the country are going to rise to near record levels. They may even hit some 90s over parts of Texas.

One small spot in south Texas may reach the triple digits. Wow!

So we will have mixed temperature tomorrow over our region. This could happen again later this week. For now I have highs in the 60s with dry conditions both Thursday and Friday.

Temperature Trend

We are more confident in some stronger warming for next weekend as the winds look to really pick up out of the south. For now Saturday is looking dry with high temps in the mid 70s. (Though it will be breezy). Then on Sunday we may hit some mid-upper 70s. However, there will probably be some rain late in the day. I’ll talk more about that possibility in tomorrow’s weather blog.
