Last night we had some scattered strong storms moving over the region. They started up around 6:30 and kept going until about 9pm.
These put down some large hail over several areas. There were numerous reports of large hail from the National Weather Service.
Here is a video sent in from the Sterling Family from around Eastville, VA.
The setup for this was that there was a cool front sliding into the region. We had a little bit of wind shear (mid-upper level winds) and a little bit of instability. There was also an upper-level low overhead that helped to create the unstable environment. This is basically a large spinning mass of much colder air aloft. It can also lower the freezing level which likely happened.
Today that front has moved offshore. So we have cooler, drier, and more stable air moving into the region.
High pressure is edging closer to our region. However, the area of low pressure over the northeast states is strengthening. It will be a nor’easter storm up there, but I wouldn’t call it a “classic” nor’easter. Down here we’ll have a breeze out of the west/northwest. Gusts will be up to 25mph this afternoon.
It will be a nice day overall. We’ll be partly cloudy through most of the day with mostly sunny skies for a time. High temps will be in the low-mid 70s.
The only rain that we may see is a stray shower north of the metro. That will be from the departing upper level low. It should be nice weather at the parks, but it will be a little cool for the beaches.
Tonight we’ll have clearing skies with much cooler temps. Lows will be in the low-mid 50s with some 40s inland. Tomorrow we’ll have lots of sunshine with a light northwest breeze. High temps will be in the 70s.
We’ll stay dry for most of Sunday. High temps will also be in the 70s. The humidity will stay down for the entire weekend.
By late Sunday the moisture will return a bit to the region. We may have an isolated shower by Sunday evening. However, there will probably be some scattered rain showers Sunday night into Monday morning.
I’m hopeful that if we get some rain in the morning that it will then move out by the afternoon.
Check back for updates on that. We’ll likely have more rain on Tuesday.
As some of you may have heard…The forecast from NOAA is out for the 2025 hurricane season.
I’ve said it often that I’m not a fan of the hurricane season forecasts. However, I do want to give you the information. The season officially starts on June first. We’ll be talking more about it then.
Until then have a great/safe Memorial Day weekend!
