Blog: Drying out with chilly temps for Christmas

Today is Christmas Eve. I wish we had some nice weather for travelers today. However, it will be wet for some. We started off this morning with some scattered rain showers. There was also a little mixed precip in some isolated locations.

Local Satellite/Radar

This was caused by some moisture pushing up into a colder/drier air mass. A weak area of low pressure was creeping closer from the south with high pressure offshore.

Regional Weather Map

A cold front was moving through the Midwest towards the Northeast.

The precip this morning was turning into scattered/light rain showers as temperatures slowly warmed. We will have a few rain showers today, but it won’t be a washout. They will continue into the afternoon hours.

Future Trak This Afternoon

The best chance for rain will be to the southeast. There will be little rain chances north and northwest.

Rain Chances Today

This will affect some travelers that are heading south or southwest today.

Travel Forecast Today

Another system will create a few showers later today between Roanoke and D.C. High temps will be in the 40s there.

High temps will be in the upper 40s locally. It will be cool, but better than the last couple of days. There won’t be much wind. It will be out of the west then north at 8-12mph.

We should dry out by this evening. The offshore low will pass well to our east. It may take a while to dry out over the Outer Banks as that location is closer to the low. Hopefully, we’ll all dry out by 9pm. So it should be smooth sailing for Santa this evening.

Christmas Eve Forecast

Overnight lows will be in the mid 30s with partly cloudy skies.

By tomorrow the cold front will drop to our south. We’ll be dry and chilly with high temps in the mid 40s. It will be good for travel in the region.

Travel Forecast Tomorrow

We’ll be dry with highs near 50 degrees on Thursday and Friday. Then we’ll be more into the 50s over the weekend.

Happy holidays and safe travels!
