I’m two weeks into my internship with WAVY TV 10 and the Hampton Roads Show (HRS)! So far, it’s been interesting. The first half of my morning I am part of the production crew on the HRS and am learning to command the floor as a floor director. The biggest thing I’ve learned is to make sure you’re paying attention to commands given from the control room so you can communicate to the floor. Sometimes there’s a lot going on and you need to make sure everybody is where they need to be and that they know when the cameras are about to start rolling. We also need to make sure the studio is properly prepared beforehand, that all guests are mic’d up, and the hosts have their mics ready for them. Repetition is your biggest friend so that these things become second nature.

The second half of my morning is learning to add information, images and make adjustments to the rundown for the next day’s show. This process looks like rocket science at first because it may be very unfamiliar. But, again, repetition! It’s getting a little easier the more I do it, and it also helps me get a little bit of a head start on the next day’s show, by knowing how many guests we have, if someone will be in the kitchen, interviews, performances, etc. But I also have to pay attention to the rundown the day of the show because anything can change!

Overall, the experience has been pretty good so far. There hasn’t been a shortage of guests, you get to watch people cook, talk about their businesses, products, and even watch performances on Live Music Fridays! I can see myself having a television career and this WAVY TV 10 intern experience is a great place to start!
