PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – It’s my last day as an intern at WAVY and I can’t believe it’s already over! It feels like a couple weeks ago I was having orientation and just getting started. For my last blog post, I want to reflect on my journey here at WAVY-TV 10.

Being born and raised in Newport News, WAVY-TV 10 was always my number one news source. Walking into the studio doors the first day was one of the most surreal moments of my career, because WAVY was the first thing that inspired me to study communications and want to work in production. I never imagined the same studio would help me to grow so much in my career, but I’m so grateful it did.

Since interning, I feel so affirmed that I am on the right path. Getting to floor direct and work with different guests each day has given me a newfound confidence and helped me find my voice in a studio setting. Even shadowing all the different departments has helped me learn that there’s so much more than just production that I would love to do one day! I loved having the opportunity to practice stand-ups and creating my own news package, and getting to sit in on promotions!

I absolutely cannot forget to thank everyone that has helped me on this journey… Stephanie Cooke and Kenisha Stringfield, who taught me the ropes and always made sure I was doing okay, all off the HRS crew, Craig, Mal, Deborah, Patrice, Chris, and Tara (work was never a dull day!), Bob Bennett, who always gave me great feedback and help when I shadowed newsroom, Brooklynn Banks, my fellow intern for HRS, and everyone else I interacted with every day! I also want to give a special thanks to Maggie McDearmon and Robert Milazzo at VCU who continuously support me throughout my academic journey and career. I would not have had the confidence to even apply for this internship without your support.

If you are a college student and found these blog posts while considering to apply like I did, do it! Getting the chance to intern for the summer at WAVY opened the doors to so many new opportunities and experiences I would have never imagined. I can’t wait to take this experience with me and grow more throughout the rest of my career.
