Getting into the flow of the Hampton Roads Show

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Since my previous blog post, I’ve finally started to get comfortable at The Hampton Roads Show with my tasks each day. Each morning when I arrive, I make sure the set is ready for air, write down mic assignments for guests and work on the rundown for the next show before going back into the studio to mic guests and get ready to floor direct! Once the show is over, I help clean up the set, assist in getting microphones, IFB’s, and teleprompters set up for WAVY’s midday newscast, and continue working on the rundown for the next show.

On June 24, Co-host Tara Wheeler had her last day at the Hampton Roads Show, and it was very bittersweet! Although I haven’t been around long, Tara was extremely kind and helpful to me, teaching me how to use WordPress as well as AKTA on my first day, which is used for articles on the WAVY website! I definitely won’t forget Tara, and I’m excited to welcome the new Co-host soon!

I also had the opportunity to shadow both the Producer and Director of the Hampton Roads Show this week! Deborah and Mal have both been so helpful showing me the ropes of HRS and WAVY this past month, so it was really cool to take a moment and see what their responsibilities look like when the show goes live. It was also really cool to see what HRS looks like from the control room!

One of my favorite experiences so far has definitely been being able to write articles and cut video for the WAVY website. I’ve been able to write four so far, and it’s still surreal to see my name each time the article goes live!

I’ve had so much fun so far getting comfortable at the Hampton Roads Show, and I can’t wait to finally start shadowing other departments in the next month like promotions, sales, or news!
