PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – My time at WAVY has gone by so fast, and I only have one month left! I’ve had so much fun getting more comfortable each day I come to work and getting to know as many people as I can during my time here. At The Hampton Roads Show, I’ve been able to continue writing, creating more web posts for the show, work on production rundowns and floor direct!
Since my last blog post, I’ve been able to shadow the sales, promotions, newsrooms, and digital departments! It’s been so interesting to learn about the different departments at the station, what exactly each department may do and how they all work together to help deliver news to the Hampton Roads community!
In sales, I got to sit in on the weekly sales meeting, shadow an account executive and shadow the social media sales team! In promotions, I got to learn about the logs used by the team and how those logs help to figure out what space and spots need to be filled and determine what they will fill the spot with. I also got to learn about the different types of promotional shoots they do with the rest of the crew!
In the newsroom, I got to sit in on the morning meeting, where reporters pitch different stories to cover for the day, and stories get assigned for the day. I also got to shadow the assignment desk, where I got to see and understand the different ways that news may come into the station. Then, I got to sit with a producer to learn more about the production process behind the newsroom and see how that differs from my typical production shift at The Hampton Roads Show.
I also had the opportunity to shadow the digital team, where I got to understand what their workflow looks like, and the social news desk system that helps the team to see multiple social networks at once, as well as helps them to post to social media. During my last month, I plan to shadow some field reporters and hopefully be able to record my own standups! I also hope to shadow promotions shoot, and the production behind WAVY+ originals! I can’t believe my time at WAVY has almost come to an end!
