NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police said they are not seeking any suspects after a man and woman were shot and killed Tuesday night.
Police responded to a report of a shooting around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of North Green Drive.
Residents of the townhome complex heard two shots fired. Those bullets — they would soon learn — took the life of a man and woman in the complex parking lot.
Officers arrived to find a man and woman on scene with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they aren’t seeking any suspects and “there was evidence recovered at the scene,” but did not elaborate. That’s something witnesses said they found surprising because a handful of people confirm they saw or heard a car speed away from the parking lot directly after the shots were fired.
On Wednesday, police confirmed this was not an act of domestic violence.
Neighbors we spoke with off-camera said they didn’t know the victims and don’t believe the man or woman were residents of the complex. None of the people we spoke with said they knew either victim.
The female victim has been identified as 28-year-old Courtney Renee Dwyer. Police say they will not release the identity of the man.
The investigation is ongoing. Police did not release additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
