NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A woman died Saturday after being hit by a Toyota Rav4 on Granby Street.
The woman was identified as 57-year-old Lisa Roemer, of Chesapeake. Police say Roemer was attempting to cross the 7100 block of Granby Street in the crosswalk around 8:45 p.m. when she was hit.
Family members tell 10 On Your Side’s Deanna Bettineschi that Roemer was leaving festival at the time.
Witness Paul Fahrenbach said people rushed in to see if she was OK.
“There was a Navy captain select nurse, so she immediately came on over and was starting
treating first aid to her immediately,” said Fahrenbach.
Neighbors say Granby Street is difficult to cross.
“There’s constant traffic, Granby is very busy,” Fahrenbach said.
Roemer’s family says there were no officers assisting people across the street when the crash happened.
10 On Your Side did reach out to Norfolk police to find out during a big event like this, which is responsible for providing officers to help people cross traffic.
Norfolk police say since it wasn’t a city event, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral would be responsible to bring officers in.
Neighbors did say the day after Roemer was hit, there were more officers out helping people cross the busy street on Sunday.
10 On Your Side reached out to the cathedral and we’re working to see if they called in more officers and how they’re preparing to make the event safer for next year.
Lisa was a special kind of person who was loved by many. She always put others before doing anything for herself. One of her greatest accomplishments in life was her family. Her best memories were made while being surrounded by her grandchildren, especially at Christmas time where she always put up a round 25 themed Christmas trees throughout her home (seriously lol). Lisa was recently widowed and the family takes comfort in knowing that she is reunited in heaven with her high school sweet heart and husband, John. The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers and support this community has shown.”
Police say the driver stayed at the scene.
They say once they complete a full investigation, they turn what they have over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney, who then decides what charges, if any, the driver will face.
