PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A new problem for students who attended the former Alliance Christian Academy in Portsmouth.

The private school shut down in 2017 after 45 years. Now alumni are having issues tracking down their high school transcripts.

The missing documents are greatly affecting the lives of former students like Jewell, who graduated in 1999.

“No one has returned my calls. I’ve left several messages and no one has contacted me to give me any information,” said Jewell.

She needs her high school transcripts so she can finish her college degree in Florida where she now lives with her husband. Although she has an associates degree she says schools need her high school transcripts as well. She can’t register for classes without it.

“It’s very frustrating because now I’m behind trying to get registered for the fall.”

Jewell is not the only one the missing records are affecting. Her former classmate Holli Poole is also concerned.

“I have two children that have talked about being home schooled possibly. The first step I was told I needed to take was to get my transcripts,” said Poole.

Experts in storing documents say legally, students transcripts must be kept and must be accessible.

Jewell says government agencies she’s contacted have Alliance Church listed as the custodian of the records.

The problem is Alliance Church doesn’t exist anymore.

Now Jewell, Holli and other alumni worry the records will never be found.

“That’s what I’m afraid of because the church is no longer there, the school is no longer there,” explained Jewell. “So where did the transcripts go?”

No one seems to know the answer.
