NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — It has been two months since a Newport News teen was shot and killed inside his grandmother’s home.
Now, his family and friends are coming together to ask the community to change its ways.
“It’s been a living hell, a living hell. I’ve been getting through because of family. I’ve been getting through because of friends who love him, his real friends,” said Tamara Brown, the mother of James “Tutu” Claggion IV.
On March 16, police found Claggion dead inside a home on Chestnut Avenue.
No arrests have been made.
Brown is working to keep her son’s legacy alive because she said he helped so many others in his short 18 years.
Now, she hopes to help others by preventing what happened to him from happening to others.
“There was a violation in my mother’s home. There was a violation in front of Ms. Gracie’s house and so many other parents this has happened to. Those are our children. Those are our children. They have no right to take something we brought into this world,” Brown said.
Brown was also joined by the mother of Elijah McClean, who was shot and killed in a car on 37th Street, and Hakima Muhammad, who is a community leader with Sister to Sister, Brother to Brother.
All want to make Newport News a better city and believe it’s up to residents and city leaders to help.
“If we do say we love Newport News, let us show that we love the city where we live and clean it up one block at a time,” Muhammad said.
Brown encourages residents to help by supporting and reaching out to others in need, that includes using the CRIMELINE to anonymously give information.
She’s hopeful that someone will take the next step to put their city first and help catch the killers.
“I refuse to stop. This will not be a cold case. I’m speaking to the people that did this to my son and others peoples’ kids. Don’t ever think you’re getting away with it. Everything happens for a reason. You will be served justice. Your day is coming,” Brown said.
If you have any information, you can call the CRIMELINE at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or use P3 tips.
