PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A little over halfway and no signs of slowing down at WAVY. In fact, I can see we’re getting better! Learning our rolls, responsibilities, getting more comfortable to the point we’re still making little mistakes here and there but nothing crazy. Just little things we need to clean up, which is how it goes while you’re perfecting your craft!
Last two weeks have been a little crazy in the sense that we’ve had shows where a lot of adjustments have been made prior to show, and even mid-show. From guests not showing up so we have to float that part of the show and add a package or something to make up the time that interview would have taken had the guest shown up, to changing where the guest will do an interview mid-show. I’ve seen a technical issue in the control room, but the team was calm and handled it in time. I was waiting for a panic, but it never came! I respect that! Showed me how to be professional in those situations. It was cool because we knew what was going on behind the scenes, but watching it on TV, you would never know!

The biggest thing for me has been the changes on the show. From our hosts to our control room. Different people coming in to fill positions. The reason I liked this is because it shows the different styles, the different ways people do things. Even different lingo to some degree. But this past week with us interns, and Julia and Dana filling in for Patrice and Chris, it was like learning as a team! All of us learning and figuring things out, getting better. And it gives a sense of comradery. Of course, it’s good to learn from the vets, but when the rookies come together, it’s like we have to be better for each other. And learning how my other two fellow interns like to operate and what they’re comfortable with has made it easier to adjust and work together. Also, giving Dana and Julia some of my knowledge and vice versa so we understand things better like what we all hear from the control room since the hosts don’t hear everything we hear.

And of course, HRS would not be HRS if not for the guests!! This performance on Live Music Fridays I think we can all agree was a bit interesting! Definitely entertaining. I’ve gotten more comfortable with the guest and getting them Mic’d up. They always seem surprised when I tell them I’m an intern. They sometimes think I actually work with them with the way I handled things I guess. Not to mention I’m older. But there is always respect between us. Sometimes I’ll be working and they’ll come up to me and shake my hand or wave to get my attention or something to speak before they leave and I appreciate that! Some of them I network with, and we’re even friends on Instagram.
