ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — A man was sentenced to over 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

According to a release, on Oct. 15, 2025, 55-year-old John Randall Landry pled guilty to second-degree murder in connection with a suspicious death that occurred in June of 2021.

Police said that around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Hughes Boulevard for reports of a suspicious death. Upon arrival to the scene, officers found 54-year-old Jacqueline Marie Castal dead due to a gunshot wound.

During sentencing, Judge Eula Reid sentenced Landry to a total of 12 to 16 years in prison in connection with the incident.
