PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia ranks among the states most affected by the 2025 government shutdown, according to a new study by the personal finance company WalletHub.
The study determined that Virginia is the sixth most affected state by the shutdown.
With the U.S. government experiencing its 23rd funding lapse since 1976 and its 11th actual shutdown, WalletHub released a report on the States Most & Least Affected by the 2025 Government Shutdown.
WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across five key metrics, including each state’s share of federal jobs, federal contract dollars per capita and the percentage of families receiving food assistance.
