VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Residents in the Windsor Woods area of Virginia Beach experienced flooding in their neighborhood Tuesday.
10 On Your Side visited West Colonial Parkway, where the flooded roads were causing issues for drivers all afternoon.
“I had a vehicle drive through my side yard today because they didn’t want to go through the water,” said Eric McKenna-Hallal, a Windsor Woods resident. “I’ve seen five tow trucks go by in the last hour with different vehicles.”
McKenna-Hallal said that this type of flooding is a reality for those who live in the neighborhood.
The neighborhood got hit by Hurricane Matthew back in 2016. He said most of the homes had to be redone because of the damage from flooding.
“Residents had to go down to the studs and regut it, put in new drywall, new ceilings, new roofs,” McKenna-Hallal said. “People spent millions of dollars in this neighborhood to redo their homes, and redo their vehicles, and now things are happening again.”
He wants more to be done to protect Windsor Woods during future flooding events.
A city spokesperson did send a statement Tuesday afternoon about the weather and the flooding in Windsor Woods. Part of its statement reads as follows:
“…The recently installed Windsor Woods Tide Gate currently has five temporary pumps in place to help lower Lake Windsor. However, during heavy rain events like this, those pumps don’t have the full capacity needed. The city has a project underway to replace these temporary pumps with a permanent, larger pump station that will provide more protection in future storms.”
McKenna-Hallal shared more about what he would like to see done.
“I really want them to look at where this water is coming from, from the Lynnhaven River up the tributaries,” McKenna-Hallal said. “I know they’re doing a lot of work at Mount Trashmore lakes right now. As you drive by, there’s a lot of work being done. They’ve done a lot of dredging. But what more can the city do to prevent these floods from continuously happening in these neighborhoods?”
