What an exciting first two weeks it has been working as the digital intern. I have already learned so much from the digital managing editor and shadowing the digital content writers, and I cannot wait to learn more. Initially, I was nervous about how much there was to remember, but that nervousness quickly turned to excitement once I started to understand the workflow and the various applications that the digital department utilizes. The crew’s very patient and encourages me to ask questions, while simultaneously challenging me to learn and push out more content each day.

One thing I was not prepared for was all of the emails to stay on top of, which is crucial because that is a primary form of communication in the station and outside to the public. The different departments, despite their different roles, all work with one another in a big web of information, which sometimes can be more chaotic than others; but that is the world of news. The applications we use help us tremendously but ultimately; they are just a tool for the work that is powered by humans.

My first published story!

My courses at Old Dominion University have prepared me well for this position, as I can definitely see myself being completely lost had I not taken the courses. However, my experience so far has taught me so much that I wouldn’t know if I didn’t take a step outside of my comfort zone and put myself out there. This is only the beginning, so stay tuned for more!
