NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Granby High School in Norfolk was placed on a brief cautionary lockdown Thursday morning.
The school system tweeted at 9:20 a.m. about the lockdown and provided an update 30 minutes later that it had been lifted.
According to police, they were alerted of the situation at 8:50 a.m. Responding officers detained the student in question and conducted a search, during which no weapon was located. No charges have been filed.
10 On Your Side reached out to the school district spokeswoman for additional information about the incident. At 11 a.m. she said the school was working on a message to send to parents and that it would be going out shortly.
The message to parents went out at 11:40 am. and stated the following:
This is Mrs. Lynnell Gibson, principal of Granby High School, with an important message. This morning school administration alerted police and initiated a lockdown on the basis of a student report that another student may have been in possession of a weapon. Police located the student in question and did a search. He was not in possession of a weapon. Subsequently, the lockdown was lifted at 9:43 a.m., and normal operations were resumed. Parents, please understand that we take all such reports seriously and follow up to ensure students remain safe. Please continue to remind your children that if they do see something, they always need to say something by reporting such concerns to school administration and the police. As always, thank you for your partnership and continued support.
