NORFOLK (WAVY) – One of the most decorated players in Old Dominion football history, linebacker Jason Henderson announced on social media on Sunday that he is stepping away from football.
Henderson suffered a serious knee injury in 2023, tearing practically ligament. He played in the first game of the 2024 season against South Carolina, but decided to take a medical red shirt.
At ODU’s spring game, Henderson was vague on whether or not he was 100 percent.
He started the Monarchs first game of the season at Indiana, but was not on the sideline for the Monarchs home opener on Saturday.
Speculation was rampant about Henderson’s future and he confirmed it on Sunday with his social media post.
Ricky Rahne meets with the media on Monday’s to discuss the previous game the week’s upcoming opponent.
Today’s media session was dominated by questions about Henderson.
“At some point Jason just got to a point where it became too difficult to keep doing the things that are necessary to play this game,” Rahne said. “For him to say I can’t play anymore, you would have to imagine the amount of physical pain he was probably in to get to that decision.”
Henderson is ODU’s all-time leading tackler, was the 2023 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year and is the Monarchs first FBS All-American.
