(WAVY) — The ocean has been ANGRY for the past few days as Hurricane Erin passed by a couple hundred miles offshore. Early Thursday morning, a buoy offshore of Cape Hatteras recorded a wave height of 44.9 feet!

The ocean will luckily continue to calm down and clean up through the weekend and there should even be a few opportunities to surf.

The best day for a beach day this weekend appears to be Saturday as there will be plenty of sunshine and low humidity. As for swimming, rough surf will continue as long period swell from Erin continues to fill in. Make sure you are near a lifeguard if you plan on entering the water.

On Sunday there will be a little bit of rain for North Carolina and the southside as an area of low pressure moves through during the day. This rain may linger until early Monday before a cold front pushes the low out to sea.

For those planning on boating, it may be a good idea to stay in the bay where winds will be lighter and waves will be smaller. Open ocean seas will remain elevated due to Erin as it pulls away.

For surfing, the East Coast Surfing Championships should have a great weekend to wrap up competition. The only downside is that winds remain onshore but it should stay light enough for manageable conditions.

Monday looks like the best day to target after the early morning front swings through. This will pull the wind offshore allowing for the ocean to clean up the 2-4ft surf that is expected.

See you in the water!
