SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A firefighter was hurt while battling an overnight fire in Suffolk.

According to officials, crews were called to the 5900 block of Old College Drive just before 4 a.m. for the report of a single-story residential structure fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke showing from the roof and fire showing from the garage of the structure.

The fire in the garage began to spread to the living space and attic. Firefighters were able to limit the fires progression.

The fire was placed under control at 4:48 a.m.

One firefighter was hurt and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No occupants were injured.

The two occupant were alerted by a working smoke alarm and evacuated prior to firefighters arrival. They are now displaced but do not require assistance from the American Red Cross. 10 On Your Side’s Michael Rinker said the couple who lived at the house had been there for around 20-25 years.

According to the neighbor of the couple, they were asleep when the fire started.

That neighbor was also woken up by a loud noise, before heading outside to see the house on fire.

“What woke me up was I heard a big boom. Then I got up and saw the house on fire, that’s when he told me to call 911,” said Larry Forrest.

Forrest has lived on the street for nearly three decades, he says the fire was a shock to the whole street.

“It’s very strange, we’ve never had something like this in this area before. This is the first time I’ve ever seen this.”

Forrest is close with the homeowner, he told 10 On Your Side that the couple has family in the area but are not sure what their path forward may be.

“He is in shock right now, he really doesn’t know what is going on until the Fire Marshal go in there and find out what started it,” Forrest said.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office.
