VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach park was the site of hate this week as a man and his daughter, while riding their bikes, stumbled upon racist and antisemitic language spraypainted on a sidewalk.

It happened Wednesday at Kempes Landing Park in Virginia Beach. The father and daughter come to the park everyday to do a a quick lap on their bikes as a apart of their daily morning routine.

“So just coming around the lake here like we do normally, doing laps and coming down the sidewalk and I notice that there is some writing on the ground, vandalism, and the text was racist, there’s no other kind way to put it,” said Virginia Beach resident Aaron Edler.

The below are images of the words spraypainted on the sidewalk, both derogatory, racist images on blatant display.

“It was one of those things — I had to sleep on it after I took a couple pictures of it,” Edler said. “I had to think about what I [had] just seen overnight because I started to notice I was getting angry about it.”

Edler said he contacted the authorities right away.

The city of Virginia Beach said its Parks and Recreation department was made aware of the graffiti and quickly washed it away. The words have been removed, but the wounds of these slurs still run deep.

“We need to clean up our act,” Edler said. “If I can bring awareness that it’s still out here and prevalent, then here I am. We need to clean up our streets. We don’t wanna raise our kids in this same scenario, not in my community at least.”

Virginia Beach Police told 10 On Your Side the incident has now been forwarded to its Detective Bureau for further investigation.
