PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Rep. Jen Kiggans and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs recently announced a nearly $80 million VA clinic in Hampton Roads.

The construction would create a community-based outpatient clinic that would expand access to healthcare, counseling and benefits. This new clinic will provide modernized medical services, mental health resources and benefit counseling that will be a hub for all veterans needs, according to Kiggans.

The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs voted to approve updated authorization for 18 VA major medical facility leases, including one in the 757.

Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine said this is a major step forward in expanding access to quality, convenient care for more than 605 of Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC) patients who live on the Southside.

“We’ve pushed to get these kinds of facilities authorized and built because we refuse to accept a system where veterans are stuck with long wait times or forced to travel hours for basic appointments,” the senators said in a joint statement.

A spokesperson for Hampton VAMC said they hope to award the project by the end of the fiscal year.

“Last week’s vote in the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee allows VA to lease space for a new outpatient clinic in or nearby Hampton Roads, Virginia, in accordance with the PACT Act,” John Rogers said. “VA intends to award this project by the end of this fiscal year. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2028, and the center is expected to begin serving patients in the spring of 2029.”

In April, a VA outpatient clinic opened in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, providing nearly 70,000 enrolled veterans access to primary care and other special services like audiology services.
