NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Eight people have reported damage to their cars at Warwick Village Apartments in Newport News.

The Newport News Police Department has received at least three reports in reference to car alarms going off and vehicles being broken into in the 400 block of Nelson Drive this week.

One victim who wanted us to use only her first name Amber said she was shocked when a neighbor knocked on her door late Thursday night.

“(She said) ‘You know your car door’s open, and, your alarm was going off,’ and I was like, what? so I come out there barefoot, step in glass and realize my car door’s wide open and my back windshield is busted out.”

Her Kia Forte had damage to the steering column, not surprising after police confirmed the burglars targeted Kias and Hyundais — reminiscent of theft troubles with those models a few years ago.

One owner of a Kia Soul was victimized for the second time this week.

Another neighbor walked past the three young male suspects as they roamed the neighborhood for several hours.

“I happened to look up [and saw] three guys, masks, black and white clothing on,” she said. “I wasn’t going to say anything because you don’t know what people do.”

The smashed glass and damaged steering columns have also shattered neighbors’ sense of safety.

“I’ve definitely been out here late at night, And now I don’t feel comfortable doing that anymore,” Amber said.

“It makes me leery,” saidmanother neighbor who wanted to be known only as Nat. “I just worry. Is it somebody within the apartment complex involved?”

Police say no vehicles have been taken to date.

Detectives are continuing to investigate and canvass the area. Police say there will be increased patrols due to the incidents.
