NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After having transitioned into a recovery mission, the search for a swimmer who went missing in the Chesapeake Bay was called off Friday pending new developments, according to the Coast Guard.

The Norfolk Police Department said officers were called to the 700 block of East Ocean View Avenue around 12:50 p.m. Thursday for a report of a person missing in the water.

The swimmer was described as a man with black trunks, according to Lt. Carmel McAndrews with the United States Coast Guard.

Coast Guard crews, Norfolk Fire-Rescue and dive teams all assisted in the search efforts. Later in the evening, the United States Coast Guard told 10 On Your Side they suspended their search at 4:20 p.m.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., Norfolk Emergency Communications followed up and told 10 On Your Side that all search efforts were ceased and it has turned into a recovery effort.
