VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes have officially invaded Hampton Roads and throughout the U.S.

An alarming report from Accuweather has declared Hampton Roads as one of the worst hotspots for mosquito infestation in the nation, and the approaching threat of disease is only intensifying concerns.

Hot temperatures and humidity are the two dominant factors leading mosquitoes on a fast-track to the Hampton Roads region, according to Connor Eason, Diamond Exterminators Vice President of Operations.

“Especially with all the rain that we’ve been having, it’s something that again, they’re going to continue to build up,” he says.

Although it’s peak season, Diamond Exterminators is seeing a stiff increase and spraying up to 50 homes a day.

“It’s the worst I’ve seen for sure,” Eason says. “It’s just been crazy. I’ve had people calling me off of the hook needing services, but it’s by far the worst summer that I’ve seen since we’ve been in business.”

“These mosquitoes are also moving disease into the area. Just last week, The Norfolk Department of Public Health detected a positive mosquito sample for West Nile Virus in Norfolk. Piling on, AccuWeather has deemed Hampton to “have an extreme mosquito-activity risk,” landing in the highest category on their scale.

There have been just under 50 human disease cases for West Nile Virus across 15 states nationwide reported for the current year by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Two of those cases were in the Commonwealth.

“It kind of started in Central Virginia and it’s kind of made its way down here,” he says. “Like I said, just the amount of hot weather and the humidity that we’ve been having, people traveling and mosquitoes travel as well, you know, they’re light insects so they can fly and they can get taken by wind currents.”

Eason says they’re currently treating all areas of Hampton Roads but residents can play a part in helping disrupt the spread.

“We do things on a monthly basis here,” says Eason. “So, one spray is not going to really get it done because you have larvae and stuff that they lay in different areas. So, you have to be able to kind of kill it off the source. Make sure you have drains that when the downspouts are draining, they’re not just puddling up around the house because that’s standing water.”
