CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Chesapeake Fire Department responded to a fire at an auto repair shop on South Military Highway Wednesday morning.

According to officials, crews were dispatched to the 2900 block of South Military Highway around 5:20 a.m. for reports of a commercial building fire. Upon arrival to the scene, crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building and multiple vehicles also on fire.

“Upon arrival, there was fire coming from the business and it spread to several vehicles, several vehicles were damaged this morning,” said Lt. Shaun Williams with Chesapeake Fire Department.

As a result of the fire, the westbound lanes of South Military Highway nearby State Street were closed, according to Chesapeake Public Works. All lanes have since reopened.

A WAVY 10 viewer who wishes to remain anonymous sent video of the fire, showing just how intense the flames and smoke were towards the beginning of the incident.

WAVY’s Keagan Hughes was at the scene Wednesday morning, where officials told her no injuries were reported.

Crews said the fire was considered under control just after 6 a.m. and that the business was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

“There were some difficulties from the vehicles and access to it, but crews did a good job, quick access knocking it down,” said Williams

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
