CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man accused of illegally recording people in a medical center restroom now faces more than 150 such charges.
Jeffrey Leffel has been accused of placing a cell phone in a restroom at a Sentara Health facility on Edwin Drive in Chesapeake over a period of several years. According to court documents, the recordings began in 2021.
Previously, Leffel had 42 counts of filming a nonconsented nude person against him, but now, there are 170 such charges against him, all misdemeanors. He faces another charge of model for obscene film/photo. Forty-two charges are under the misspelled name of Leefel.
10 On Your Side tried to reach out to Leffel at his residence, but there was no answer at the door. Later, through his lawyer, Leffel told 10 On Your Side not to return to the property. He received bond for a second time on the latest charges Wednesday, and had an arraignment Thursday.
There are more alleged recordings and victims at the Sentara Family Medicine and Pediatrics in Chesapeake.
As we reported June 17 when it was reported there was a secret recording device, the building manager went to the bathroom to recover the phone and then the court document states, “the employee Jeffrey Leffel walked to him saying his life was over because of this. Leffel said he placed his work phone to record people using the bathroom. That he had been doing this for years.”
Leffel had been an employee with Sentara for nine years before he was terminated May 29, when the accusations first surfaced.
Court documents state a victim was using the bathroom when she found a hidden cell phone recording her.
The phone was positioned so the camera was pointed towards the bathroom toilet.
10 On Your Side found the phone extractions indexed over 10 pages for the first 42 charges. They read:
- “As this video begins, the toilet is observed behind Jeffrey Leffel’s face as the camera is placed into position. Leffel leaves the bathroom at the 40 second mark.”
- “At 1 minute 5 seconds. An adult female enters the restroom and uses the toilet.”
- “At 49 minutes 18 seconds. An adult male enters the restroom and urinates while standing. An adult female enters the restroom and uses the toilet.”
That’s about all we can show because then it describes the victims’ private areas that were exposed.
Leffel will be back in court on all 170 charges Aug. 6 for a preliminary hearing.
