SOUTHERN SHORES, N.C. (WAVY) – A WAVY viewer captured some pretty incredible video off the coast of Southern Shores on the Outer Banks this week.

The video clearly shows a hammerhead shark making a beeline towards a stingray.

The shark grabs the stingray by its barb and drags it away.

Jonny Mausteller recorded the moment Monday morning and shared it with WAVY.

According to North Carolina Sea Grant, hammerhead sharks are found in the Outer Banks, but their numbers have decreased. Scalloped hammerheads are the most common large hammerhead species in North Carolina, the organization cites on its website.

WAVY reached out to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island to learn more about hammerhead shark sightings in the region. Spokesperson Michael Remige responded and said hammerheads are common in the warmer months and that their main prey is stingrays.
