RALEIGH, N.C. (WAVY) – With the 4th of July holiday upon us, many people will be participating in fun activities, such as cookouts, parties, and boat outings. On the other hand, the holiday also leads to an increase in accidents, like boating under the influence.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) Law Enforcement Division officers are participating in Operation Dry Water, a national campaign created by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the U.S. Coast Guard. It aims to improve water safety during the July 4-6 weekend.

ODW’s mission is to reduce boating accidents and increase awareness of the dangers of impaired boating. Law enforcement agencies participating in the campaign will increase the number of BUI officers in the water. They handle things like operating water patrols and enforcing state laws.

The Independence Day holiday weekend often leads to more casualties and fatalities in the water. One of the main factors for the accidents is alcohol consumption, which can increase impaired boating incidents. Just last year, 153 CWRC officers removed 37 boaters from the water who were boating under the influence.

“Boating under the influence continues to be a serious and preventable problem,” said Lt. Forrest Orr. “Our goal is create a safer environment for all recreational boaters, paddlers, and waterway users. That’s why, with this joining agencies across the country through Operation Dry Water to prevent incidents, injuries, and fatalities caused by impaired boating.”

Registration for Operation Dry Water is offered in all states for local, federal and state level law enforcement agencies.
