FRISCO, N.C. (WAVY) — A 67-year-old man from New York died Monday afternoon after being found face down in the Atlantic Ocean in Frisco.

According to the National Park Service, the man, from Nanuet, New York, was in the Atlantic Ocean just east of Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 49 in Frisco just before 3 p.m. and was swimming without a floatation device when he was seen face down in the water.

Bystanders rescued the man, brought him to shore and, along with Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue staff, started giving him CPR. Dare County Emergency Medical Services and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rangers also responded to the incident.

Officials said the rip current forecast for the Frisco beaches Monday was moderate, though rip currents were not observed in the area surrounding the incident.

“Cape Hatteras National Seashore extends our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” said David Hallac, superintendent of the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
