PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A man was found dead in a lake in the Port Norfolk neighborhood in Portsmouth Sunday morning, according to Portsmouth Police.

Police say the lake is located near Barlow Dr. and a death investigation is currently underway.

10 On Your Side’s Madison Pearman spoke to the woman who made the 911 call. She believes the body may be connected to an earlier shooting.

“We heard gunshots probably close to one in the morning. It woke me up. I looked out the window this morning, and I saw what I thought was trash,” said the woman, who wished to stay anonymous.

“And as the morning went on, it was moving closer and closer to the back of my house. So when I went in the back yard to start cleaning, I went out there to look. And it was a body.”

The woman told Pearman it took her two hours to spot the body because at first she believed the body was actually trash. She described the person pulled from the water, who was later identified as 43-year-old Gerry Carlton Askew, Jr., as a Black man wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

“I always look at things strange when I see trash. The first thing that crosses my mind is that it’s a body. And this morning, I tried to talk myself out of that. And it actually was a body. It took me about two hours to go back there and look, because I really thought it was trash.”

The woman, who is a mental health professional, had some advice for those who may find out the news of a loved one.

“We have a lot of mental health resources and they can always call 988 if things get too heavy for additional help. But look into the family counseling, grief therapy.”

Detectives of the Major Crime Unit determined there was no foul play in connection to Askew’s death and his body was turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
