NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Bond was denied Thursday morning for a father accused of killing his infant daughter and her mother.
Carlos Johnson, 46, is charged with the murder of Kier Johnson, 34, and her infant daughter Chloe, who was only 8-months-old. The mother and daughter were last seen on April 30, 2017. Nearly 8 years later, on Feb. 14, 2025, Carlos Johnson was arrested during a traffic stop in Newport News in connection with the incident.
10 On Your Side’s Nick Broadway was at the bond hearing Thursday morning, where he saw many of Carlos Johnson’s family members — as well as family of Kier and Chloe.
During the hearing, defense attorneys argued that Carlos Johnson is not a flight risk since he stayed in the area for eight years following the incident. They also claimed that the only evidence against Carlos Johnson is circumstantial.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney, however, argued that Carlos Johnson only stayed in the area for so long because he thought he got away with murder. While the Commonwealth conceded on the point of evidence being circumstantial, they said there is a lot of said evidence.
Attorneys then said Carlos Johnson tried to convince Kier to get an abortion, saying he didn’t want the child. After Kier started taking Carlos Johnson to court for child support, both Kier and Chloe disappeared — with Kier’s phone pinging at Carlos Johnson’s house before disconnecting.
The Commonwealth said they believe a friend of Carlos Johnson used his vehicle to help build an alibi while Carlos Johnson was driving Kier’s vehicle, taking it to the James River Bridge before turning around. They concluded by saying they were concerned for the safety of witnesses, and stated the death of an 8-month-old is enough of a potential danger to the public.
Carlos Johnson’s next court date is scheduled to take place Aug. 21.
