Speed cameras active in Hampton Roads summer school zones

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A heads up about something new that will impact drivers in Hampton Roads this summer. Some cities with speed camera enforcement will continue to use these cameras in select school zones with summer programs.

Chesapeake

The Chesapeake Police Department announced there will be active camera zones for the summer of 2025, between June 30 and July 31.

Active zones and enforcement times are below:

Sparrow Road Intermediate – 1500 block of Sparrow Rd
– 7:05 a.m. – 7:50 a.m. & 11:20 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.
Deep Creek Central Elementary – 2600 block of Moses Grandy Trail
– 7:05 a.m. – 7:50 a.m. & 11:20 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.
Western Branch Primary – 3300 block of Tyre Neck Rd
– 7:05 a.m. – 7:50 a.m. & 11:20 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.
Deep Creek High School – 500 block of George Washington Hwy N
– 8:15 a.m. – 9 a.m. & 1:05 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.

Hampton

According to a news release from the City of Hampton, all school zones with summer programs will have active flashing traffic lights in these zones for 30 minutes before and after student arrival and dismissal times. Drivers exceeding the posted speed limit during these times may receive a ticket. According to the city, this change from previous years is aimed at enhancing student safety.

Kilgore Gifted Center
– Now through July 26, 2025 (Closed July 3)
– Monday – Thursday
– Flashing Times:
• Morning: 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
• Afternoon: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Phenix & Andrews
– June 25 – July 24, 2025 (Closed July 3)
– Monday – Thursday
– Flashing Times:
• Morning: 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.
• Afternoon: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

High School Summer School (All High Schools – Bethel, Hampton, Kecoughtan, Phoebus)
– June 25 – August 3, 2025 (Closed July 3)
– Monday – Thursday
– Flashing Times:
• Morning: 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
• Afternoon: 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

High School Summer Bridge Program (All High Schools – Bethel, Hampton, Kecoughtan, Phoebus)
– August 4 – August 7, 2025
– Monday – Thursday
– Flashing Times:
• Morning: 8 a.m. – 9 a.m.
• Afternoon: 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

There are several other localities with school zone speed cameras installed. WAVY is working to learn if the cameras will be activated in these localities over the summer as well.
