HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Roads is under an extreme heat warning. Not an ideal time to lose power, but unfortunately this happened to more than 1,500 Dominion Energy customers on the peninsula Tuesday.
According to the Dominion Energy outage summary, approximately 1,500 customers in Hampton lost power late Tuesday morning because of a circuit outage. The map showed the outage centered around St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church off Todds Lane. As of 4 p.m., Dominion Energy was still reporting 1,500 outages. The company said it expected power to be restored by 5 p.m. At 5 p.m., less than 20 customers were without power in Hampton.

The outage site also showed a few dozen outages in Newport News around the same time.
Later in the afternoon, 526 customers lost power in Virginia Beach, caused by “emergency work.” It’s centered along Atlantic Avenue at the Oceanfront, near First Landing State Park. Power was estimated to be restored between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Cherise Newsome with Dominion Energy told WAVY they are closely monitoring, staying alert, and reducing planned outages and maintenance to help keep the power on for its customers.
She said the regional grid operator also put out an alert over the weekend saying that power companies had to keep all equipment going to produce the most power during high demand. The grid operator is forecasting increased peak demand.
