PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The conflict between the Israel and Iran, and the United States involvement over the weekend, is sparking concerns amongst Americans.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a warning about the potential for Iran to call for violent attacks on America and low-level cyber-attacks.
Just hours later, President Donald Trump announced that war may be winding down. He announced on his truth social media platform that there is a total ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran.
However in Virginia, there are still concerns about security, especially ahead of Fourth of July celebrations.
“My biggest concern is a lone wolf attack anytime that you attend a public event, or that’s considered a mass gathering, and Fourth of July will bring together the crowds,” said Cliff Lent, president of M7 Solutions.
Lent said when he sees any type of threat increase either nationally or internationally, he takes it as an opportunity to think about his own security plans. That could be knowing your emergency exits and where to meet up with family members in case something goes wrong.
“You don’t have to live in fear,” Lent said. “[You] don’t have to be paranoid, but you can take very basic steps to ensure the safety of yourself and your family.”
He said it’s important to have a plan in place if you go to a large gathering and to talk about it with your family ahead of time.
“Anybody that speaks about and articulates their plan of egress, their plan of escape, their plan if something goes wrong, is going to be much better prepared than somebody that leaves it up to chance,” Lent said.
Kenneth Stiles worked for the CIA for 30 years and he told 10 On Your Side it’s all about situational awareness.
“Know what’s going on around you,” Stiles said. “Fourth of July in Virginia Beach is going to be hot and humid. If you see a guy with a long raincoat on, huh, that’s kind of interesting.”
Both the Fort Monroe Authority and the Virginia Beach Police Department both say security measures will be the same at Fourth of July festivities this year as they have been in previous years.
“Go to all of these events,” Lent said. “Enjoy them fully, but in the back of your mind, before you start to relax and enjoy the evening, ask yourself one simple question, if something were to go wrong here today, what is my plan,?”
