HAMPTON, Va.(WAVY)– A man has died after being hit by a car in Hampton early Monday morning.

According to police, officers were called to the intersection of West Mercury Boulevard and Big Bethel Road at 12:21 a.m. for the report of a pedestrian accident. When Hampton police and Hampton Fire and Rescue units arrived on scene, they located a man laying in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

After investigating, it was revealed that the pedestrian was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of West Mercury Boulevard when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

There was no designated crosswalk at the location he attempted to cross.

The crash remains under investigation by members of the Hampton Police Division’s Reconstruction Team.
