CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Cayden Addison is battling a rare form of leukemia known as Philadelphia chromosome, which affects only 3% of patients.
He was diagnosed at age 3 and has undergone chemotherapy, a relapse, and even had to take up to 15 medications daily at a point in time. The 8-year-old is now in critical need of a blood stem cell transplant.
“He’s a normal kid,” said Cayden’s mother, Courtney Addison. “If you were to see him, you would never know what he’s gone through. It’s still awful that we have to pump him with chemotherapy every single night just to keep things at bay.”
Despite his diagnosis, his mother told 10 On Your Side Cayden always remains positive and knows how to have a good time. When life gives him lemons, he makes lemonade, and he even makes friends with a famous pop star like Jojo Siwa.
The two were connected through the National Marrow Donor Program, or NMDP, for a virtual meet-n-greet via Facetime.
“It’s really funny,” Courtney Addison said. “Prior to the interview, he was like really excited. Energy bouncing off the walls. but as soon as we got on that call, he just got so shy. And he didn’t really want to talk, and he was kind of whispering.”
Siwa now uses her platform with millions of followers to encourage young people, ages 18 to 30, to get tested to see if they could be a potential match for Cayden Addison and many other families. The 22-year-old is part of a national campaign launched by NMDP to inspire people in her age group to join the NMDP registry.
