PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A person is dead in Portsmouth Wednesday following a shooting in the 2100 block of Elm Avenue, according to police.

Officers responded to the call around 5:18 p.m. and found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims succumbed to their injuries on scene, while the other was transferred to a local hospital.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of a Food Mart store on Elm Avenue. Nearby residents said they came outside after hearing the shots.

“It sounded like a good amount of gunfire, and stuff like that so definitely not from one but maybe a couple,” Elm Avenue resident Rodney Ruth said, “I’ve lived here for over a year now and this is the first time anything like this has happened so its definitely pretty heartbreaking.”
