Over the last few days there has been a lot of rain over the region. During my birthday party Saturday it rained almost the entire time. Over the last 2 days there was a lot of rain over northeast North Carolina and a few spots in southeast Virginia.

Elizabeth City had over 5 inches. Wow! This created some flooding down that way for a time. We had a few more showers yesterday evening. Then there were some more scattered showers this morning during the AM commute.

These moved out by around 8:30am. Today we have a stationary front over the region. It is slowly turning into a warm front.

Unfortunately, this will create a few more showers and storms today. However, the chance is much less than the last 2 days.

We’ll have lots of clouds through the morning. Then, hopefully, we’ll have some sunshine this afternoon. We’ll have a light south wind. This should allow temps to get into the mid-upper 80s.

Tomorrow the front will lift to the north, and we’ll have a little bit of ridging overhead. That translates to a lot more sunshine. We’ll also develop a southwest breeze. A few gusts could be up to 20mph. This will push our high temperatures up to the mid 90s. Yep. That’s right.

They may even reach the mid-upper 90s. The humidity will still be very high. So the heat indices will be between 100 and 106 degrees.

On Thursday we’ll have similar conditions. High temps will be in the mid-upper 90s. The heat index will be over 100.

The difference is that a cool front will make its way into our region by Thursday evening. This will produce some scattered showers and storms.

Some of those could be strong or even severe. They should then drop to our south by Friday. This will help to lower the temps and humidity to more manageable levels.

If the long-term models are right, then we many actually have a rain-free weekend ahead. The trade-off is that the heat will come back a bit. For now high temps are aiming for the 90s. I’ll talk more about that in tomorrow’s weather blog.
Meanwhile, there has been a lot of flooding across the country. One of the more recent events was in West Virginia. Unfortunately, this flooding has been deadly. Hopefully, the pattern changes soon, but I wonder if that would allow the tropics to come alive. We’ll see.
