PORTSMOUTH, VA. (WAVY) – A warm Hampton Roads welcome home to two U.S. Navy ships!

USS Gettysburg returned to its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk, after an 8-month deployment. The ship, part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, returned last week after conducting combat operations in the Red Sea. After being deployed since last August, the Ticonderoga-class cruiser’s mission was extended twice. Families of the roughly 330 returning sailors gathered along the pier at Naval Station Norfolk to welcome their loved ones home. Our WAVY crew had the pleasure of speaking to Commanding Officer John Lucas, who said while the Navy is retiring certain cruisers, he’s not certain what the future holds for USS Gettysburg, but that he and his crew will be ready when called upon. He said he thinks they’re all ready for a nice long winter nap — in the summer.

USS Gravely also returned home to the Norfolk port, shortly after. The crew was met with cheers from family and friends after a nearly 3-month deployment to the southern border, assisting the Coast Guard.

Thank you and happy homecoming to all sailors!
