We are coming off of a fairly good weekend. There were some storms on Saturday as expected. However, yesterday was really the start of a stretch of quiet weather. Sunday was great! We had fair skies with high temps in the mid 70s. However, there were actually a few storms last night. A weak area of low pressure quickly moved through the region.

Few Storms Last Night

The storms and the low quickly have since rolled offshore far. They will continue to push out to sea.

Regional Weather Map

Today a cool front is dropping south behind the low. High pressure is slowly building in. So we’ll have lots of sunshine out there with a north breeze. It will run at 5-15mph with a few higher gusts near the shore. This will keep our afternoon high temps in the mid 70s.

Forecast Temps Today

The humidity is also dropping. Dew points will be in the upper 40s by the afternoon. Over the next few days we’ll have quiet weather. It will be nice, but the heat and humidity will both build through the week.

Muggy Meter

We won’t have any rain until we get to Friday. There may be some rain each day next weekend. We’ll see. I’ll go into more detail on that in tomorrow’s weather blog.

On another note… Hurricane season officially started yesterday. Here’s the seasonal forecast from NOAA.

Hurricane Season Forecast (NOAA)

It calls for an above average season. There are a lot of above average water temperatures over the Atlantic, but there are also a few pockets of cooler temps.

Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies

I think it will be an interesting year. Activity could possibly come in spurts like last year. The weather pattern has been really out of whack over the last couple of months. If that continues, then it could impact hurricane season. There is nothing happening out there in the short term. All is quiet.

Tropical Satellite

It should stay quiet for a few days as there is a large Saharan air layer (a dry/dusty air mass) travelling along the Atlantic. This acts to inhibit tropical formation.

Saharan Air Layer

We’ll see how much of that also affects the season. The latest forecast from the Climate Prediction Center (NOAA) has a decent shot at either a neutral season or a weak La Nina.

Again, I’m not big on the “seasonal” hurricane forecasts, but I did want to give you the information.
