HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Speaker of the House Don Scott announced the establishment of a $100,000 endowed scholarship in honor of his wife during his commencement address at Hampton University last Sunday.

Named after his wife, the Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott Endowed Scholarship will support Hampton students majoring in chemistry who aspire to pursue careers in dentistry.

“This scholarship is a reflection of everything Mellanda represents, from her love for Hampton University to her deep commitment to giving back and uplifting the next generation of leaders,” said Speaker Don Scott. “Hampton University gave her the foundation to become the incredible dentist and mentor she is today and we are proud to give back to the university that gave us so much.”

Dr. Colson Scott is a proud alumna of Hampton University’s Class of 1993. She majored in chemistry before becoming a dentist and has long championed the value of education and mentorship, particularly for students from undeserved communities with dreams of entering the medical and dental fields.

“Hampton University didn’t just prepare me for a career, it shaped who I am,” said Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott. “I love this Home by the Sea and the education and experiences I gained here were the foundation to my success. It’s truly a privilege to now help support the next generation of students, leaders, and dentists.”

The Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott Endowed Scholarship will be administered by Hampton and is expected to begin awarding funds in the upcoming academic year.
